Verhagen welcomes extra sanctions against Iran
Newsflash |
9 June 2010
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen has welcomed the UN Security Council’s new resolution on Iran. The resolution strengthens existing sanctions. ‘This is an important message to the Iranian government that it needs to be open about its nuclear programme,' says Mr Verhagen.
The Security Council voted for extra sanctions by a large
majority. Only Brazil and Turkey voted against. The new sanctions
include an arms embargo and tighter controls on goods transported
to Iran.
The EU supports the resolution. It is also exploring the scope for
additional measures against Iran, which has persisted with its
uranium-enrichment programme despite international criticism. The
UN’s IAEA inspectors have received too little cooperation from Iran
to be able to ascertain whether its programme is intended solely
for nuclear power plants.
