Netherlands pleased with new UN women’s organisation
Newsflash |
2 July 2010
The Netherlands is delighted that the United Nations General Assembly has voted to create a new institution, UN Women, which will work to achieve equal rights for women worldwide.
‘I am glad that the lengthy negotiations have resulted in a
positive outcome,’ said foreign minister Maxime Verhagen. ‘The
Netherlands has worked from the start to achieve this goal.’
UN Women, which will become operational in 2011, will incorporate
four existing UN organisations. The main objective is to improve
the position of women as partners and beneficiaries of development,
peacebuilding and humanitarian work. UN Women will be supporting
governmental and non-governmental organisations in many countries
to improve the position of, and create opportunities for, women.
The fact that UN Women will be headed by an Under-Secretary-General
– the third highest rank in the UN – indicates the importance the
UN attaches to promoting equal rights and opportunities for women.
