Foreign Policy Goals 2010

An active international and European role

The world will still be feeling the impact of the financial and economic crisis in 2010. International capital flows are drying up, world trade is shrinking, and businesses and citizens alike are finding it difficult to make ends meet. No one knows exactly how long the crisis will last or when recovery will set in. This is giving rise to feelings of fear and insecurity in many people: in the Netherlands, where people are worried about their future prospects and their old-age pensions; and in Europe, where the solidarity between the member states of the European Union is under pressure.

But developing countries are also feeling the impact, even though they are in no way responsible for causing the crisis. In times of uncertainty and economic downturn, it is more important than ever to pursue active international and European policies. After all, international trends have an enormous influence on our lives. We reap the benefits, but also suffer the consequences if things go wrong. The financial and economic crisis, climate change, international terrorism and pandemics are not confined by national boundaries. We are too closely interconnected to turn our backs on the world. At times like these, we need to work together to find solutions to transboundary challenges. Only then can we safeguard Dutch jobs, our own security, the environment and our health, while at the same time helping to reduce the appalling poverty and growing inequity in the world.

The Netherlands has long had an open and positive attitude towards Europe and the rest of the world. This spirit of openness has brought us prosperity, stability and a good quality of life. Many issues transcend national boundaries, and they are becoming increasingly intertwined. The Netherlands will continue to project itself as a constructive and creative international partner working to achieve international security and solidarity, a results-driven Europe and a sustainable living environment, in the interests of present and future generations.

The government is therefore working to meet objectives in ten priority areas:

1. A decisive and democratic Europe

2. Europe’s enlargement strategy

3. Conflict resolution in the Middle East

4. Military involvement in crisis management and security

5. Cohesion and effectiveness in security and development policy

6. Poverty reduction and sustainable economic development

7. A high profile for human rights

8. Sustainability, climate and energy

9. Providing services to Dutch citizens and companies abroad

10. Providing services to international organisations and foreign companies in the Netherlands
