Uri Rosenthal meets heads of mission from Central and Eastern Europe

Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal met last Friday afternoon with the heads of missions of 10 Central and Eastern European countries. Last week the diplomats wrote to the leaders of the parliamentary parties in the House of Representatives about a website run by the Freedom Party (PVV) which invites members of the public to make complaints about Central and Eastern European migrants.

Mr Rosenthal said that the website is the responsibility of the PVV and that political parties in the Netherlands are free – within the boundaries of the law – to undertake such initiatives.

Friday’s discussion revolved around the government’s policy on labour migration. The Netherlands welcomes the contribution that many Central and Eastern Europeans are making to Dutch society and the economy. At the same time, we need to be aware of negative factors such as anti-social behaviour, pressure on social services, and exploitation. In this connection, Mr Rosenthal referred to the proactive policy being pursued by the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment.

Mr Rosenthal emphasised the good relations between the Netherlands and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and said that he, like the heads of missions, looked forward to further strengthening these ties.
